UFO Noir

Car horns and angry shouting. Big band music. Loud conversations and a woman’s laughter. Dogs barking. Gunshots in a darkened alley. If it weren’t for the damned UFOs, it would have been a night like any other night in the city that never sleeps.

Bicycle Thieves by ‎Vittorio De Sica‎

NEWSFLASH! Bicycle Thieves by ‎Vittorio De Sica‎ is one the best movies ever made! (My reviews are super edgy)

I saw this film at TCU Film School so many years ago and clearly I was not paying attention. Probably just too young and dumb to understand. (Where are all the ninjas? Not one dinosaur or explosion??)

My viewing stream has taken me down the Italian neo-realism route recently and my brain is better for it.

Hailed as one the best films ever made there is nothing I can really say that hasn’t already been said. It might be one of my favorite films ever now and I am not sure exactly how that was pulled off. Maybe it’s the way that the simple plot presents every single person on camera in a way that is so realistic and understandable you can’t help but connect and care? The lighting. The locations. The actors. The action. The story. The relationships. The ending. Beautiful. Funny. Sweet. Sad. Perfection.

If you were like me and just never gave this film a thought before, please revisit it. Often.

Ideal Artists

Howard Thurman teaches a college class at Emory University.

“We are all artists in the sense that we are all engaged in some kind of activity by which we are realizing our ideals. What kind of ideals are you realizing?”
